An Introduction To Knitting

Before you begin any tutorials and start learning to knit, I just want to pass on something my mum regularly reminds me of…..

“Knitting isn’t science, it’s an art”

I’m quite a disciplined knitter and will follow a pattern diligently and get frustrated if I find I’ve got 1 extra stitch on my needle than I should have.  My mum on the other hand, will just shrug and knit 2 stitches together to get back on track!  And even though she does that, you can never tell as her finished item always looks beautiful.
So who is right?
Neither of us!
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to knitting!

Obviously, if you’re following something like a Fair Isle or lace pattern where your finished item has a specific design to it, then you do want to try and follow that pattern as carefully as possible – but it will probably only ever be you that notices any mistakes.

So don’t be too hard on yourself if you make mistakes, you can always “fudge” as you go!

Remember, you’re creating a piece of art – you’re not a knitting machine in a factory.

Once you have been knitting for a while you will probably find that you prefer knitting certain types of projects over others.

I, for one, have no interest in knitting socks.
I tried it a few times and really didn’t enjoy it.
Yet I have a friend who knits almost exclusively socks.

Try everything once to see if you enjoy it, and don’t ever think something is going to be too hard to at least try.
I resisted learning cables for the longest time and then when I finally taught myself I was amazed at just how easy they actually were to knit.
The same goes for the magic loop method.
I’d see that instruction on a pattern and instantly reject it because the magic loop method must surely be far too complicated for the likes of little old me.
And again, I found it surprisingly easy to do and it’s now my favourite way of decreasing a hat.

Equally, you will find things you just don’t like doing.
For me, I really despise using DPNs (double pointed needles)!
But my sock-knitting friend?  That’s all she ever uses.

And finally, if you ever get stuck, come and ask for help in my Facebook Group
