Make Your Own Fair Isle Design

I’ve created a blank chart for you to download and print.

To start with, create a design that is knit with no decrease stitches. (ie, don’t expect to work your Fair Isle design into the crown of a hat.)

Perhaps work a square to start with before moving on to a larger item.

When you’ve practised and you want to use your Fair Isle design on a hat, use the basic beanie pattern (coming within the next few days), work in a plain colour, then add 20 rows of your Fair Isle design, then go back to the plain colour and then work the decrease stitches to shape the crown in your plain colour.

Start with a plain colour, then do your Fair Isle design, then back to your plain colour to work the crown decrease.

I will be producing content to cover decreasing stitches in a Fair Isle design at a date in the very near future.

For now, use this blank chart that has a count of 20 stitches and 20 rows.

You don’t have to use the full amount, but it’s what fits comfortably on an A4 piece of paper with space at the sides to draw your arrow reminders.

Use coloured pens or pencils to keep track of the colours of yarn, and remember to avoid adding 3 colours to the same row. (Unless you like a challenge!)
